By mid September, we will be gathering in the harvest and Autumn colours begin to appear - a hint of the glorious shades to come. . .
The garden should never lack interest due to the amount of plants available with fantastic, warm Autumn colour. Although demanding tasks such as watering and feeding become less onerous, it is not yet time to pack away your garden tools as there's still plenty of maintenance and preparation jobs to be done.
Autumn is a busy time for gardeners with discarding old plants, planting new, cuttings to propagate and lawn maintenance but a last burst of energy in the garden now will reap dividends next year!

Herbaceous Borders
The ground is still warm and now is an ideal time to plant out new perennials. We have lots available, including many new varieties still arriving at the garden centre. It's also the time to divide some plant varieties e.g. Hosta's, Astilbe, Lysimachia etc. as well as cutting back, collecting and sowing seed. Feed all established borders with blood, fish & bone.

Spring Flowering Bulbs
Now is the 'big time' of the year for planting bulbs. We have all sorts of fantastic bulb varieties for a colourful show next Spring including Crocus, Daffodils, Freesias, Iris, Tulips, Snowdrops and many more.

Trees and Shrubs
|

Bedding Plants
Take cuttings of Fuchsias, Geraniums (Pelargoniums) and other tender perennials before the frosts arrive! If you haven't already got one, consider buying a greenhouse and have it fitted before Winter sets in, to protect tender perennials. Plant out Winter Pansies, Polyanthus and Winter Cabbage.

Lawn Care
This is the busiest month for lawn maintenance, however, all the following care will provide you with a much better lawn next spring.
RAKE AND SCARIFY to remove thatch, debris and moss. This also cuts the grass stolons (over ground roots) and encourages it to better.
AERATE using a hollow tiner or fork to allow air into the soil and relieve compaction.
TOP DRESS the lawn with ready to use lawn dressing. This fills the holes after aeration and adds better soil for the grass roots to grow into.
FEED the lawn with an Autumn and Winter slow release feed.
If you require a new lawn, then we can offer you 'Olympic Grade A' quality turf, delivered to us fresh, every Friday. Alternatively, choose from our wide range of quality grass seed. Click here for a look at our free information leaftet on 'Lawns from seed or turf'.

Fish Food
|
Keep feeding fish as you would normally until the water temperature falls below 10 degrees C. After this time, change food over to wheatgerm - a vegetable-based low protein diet, ideal for feeding fish at low temperatures. Wheatgerm is highly digestible and keeps ammonia excretion to a minimum.

Pond Plants
Before the frosts set in, surface plants, marginals and some bog plants may be divided. A protective straw mulch should be given to tender bog plants whereas tender floaters, e.g. Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce, should be brought indoors or sheltered in a greenhouse. Remove dead leaves and blooms before they sink and rot at the bottom of the pond.

Pond Nets
It is important to remove dead leaves and debris regularly from the surface of the water before it sinks and rots to cause sludge and ammonia build up. Use pond hand nets to do this. Alternatively, pond cover nets are the most effective way of keeping leaves out of the water and at the same time, they offer protection from predators, such as birds, cats and herons.

Pond Vac
'Pondovac 2' is a sludge vacuum cleaner that effortlessly removes algae, mud, dead plant residue, leaf remnants and fish excrement from the bottom of your pond, without having to drain the water. It has a large capacity capture tank with intelligent technology that recognises when the tank is full and shuts down completely until the tank is emptied. Its strong motor performance enables greater suction and is supplied with various nozzle attachments to enable access to difficult areas. Click here to view enlarged image.

Pond Gloves
Ideal for working with plants or for pond maintenance work underneath the water surface without getting wet or soiling clothes. Pond gloves, available in packs of 10, reach to the shoulder and are made of PVC.

Pond Lighting
Lighting can have a dramatic effect in a pond, producing its own fascination. Reflections of light, broken by the water, occupy the senses and encourage meditation. Brighten up your pond or water features this Autumn with our range of low voltage, underwater pond lighting from Oase.
